Coconut Shampoo(I Forgot You)
I wanted to write a song about someone who insists they've forgotten everything, while accidentally remembering every little detail. The more convincing the denial becomes, the less believable it is. I like that the entire story eventually comes down to something as ridiculous and specific as coconut shampoo.
I don’t remember your face
Just shadows moving in a room
Nothing I could ever trace
Nothing that stayed too long… or bloomed
I don’t recall your voice
Or how it softened on my name
It wasn’t much of a choice
We were never… what we became
I swear I let it go
Like it never left a mark
Like I never kept the way you
I forgot you
Like a song I never knew
Couldn’t hum a single line
Couldn’t tell you what was true
I forgot you
Every detail faded through
I can’t recollect the coconut shampoo
That smelled like you
No, I forgot you
I don’t remember the street
Where the light bounced off your hair
Or how you dragged your feet
Like you always wanted to stay there
I couldn’t tell you why
The color blue feels different now
Or why July
No, that’s… I don’t know how
It’s all just empty space
Nothing left I could pursue
Nothing like the way you used to
I forgot you
Like a dream I never drew
Couldn’t sketch a single line
Couldn’t say what we went through
I forgot you
That’s what I keep telling - true
I mean telling you
I can’t recollect the coconut shampoo
That smelled like you
No, I forgot you
There was never that night in October when you
And I never held your jacket at the
I don’t remember laughing when you said that thing about
And I don’t miss the way you’d fall asleep mid
Or how your fingers traced the
It’s gone
It’s all gone
It’s all
I forgot you
That’s the truth I’m sticking to
Nothing left I recognize
Nothing I could tie to you
I forgot you
There’s just things I used to do
Like avoiding 7th Avenue
And sleeping on the right side too
But that’s nothing
People change, it happens to
I forgot you
I can’t recall the coconut shampoo
That smelled like you
Or why it hits me in the evening
Like it always
No, I forgot you
There was never any song you used to
And I don’t hear your laugh when someone
I just
I forgot you
I just don’t remember why I would
I forgot you
I can’t recall the coconut shampoo
I can’t recall the coconut shampoo
I can’t recall the coconut shampoo
